Open Doors | Vans x Record Store Day

Open Doors is a digital series created in partnership with Vans and Record Store Day, highlighting the profound significance of black-owned record stores within their communities. The project, directed by DJay Brawner and supported by Tuff, serves as a platform to spotlight the stories and contributions of these stores to their surrounding areas.

Historically, black-owned record stores have played a pivotal role by offering music and fostering a profound sense of community, culture, and identity within their neighborhoods. By exploring five distinct stores and their owners, Open Doors spotlights these establishments’ vital role in preserving and celebrating cultural heritage. The series explains how these stores contribute significantly to the broader music industry and physical stores’ role in the human experience through the voices of the owners, patrons, and community members.
